A three-year-old girl, Moumita Das, was severely injured on Tuesday afternoon when an iron rod pierced her mouth while she was playing at her home in Bar-Uttarhingli village, Haldia, East Midnapore district. The child was playing alone in the house when she grabbed an iron rod that had been placed beneath a cupboard. In an unfortunate incident, she tripped and fell face-first, causing the rod to impale her mouth, damaging the area just below her throat.
At the time of the accident, Moumita's mother was occupied with cooking in another part of the house. Hearing her daughter’s screams, family members and neighbors rushed to her aid. The child was immediately taken to Haldia Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors evaluated her condition and determined that her injuries required advanced medical intervention. Given the severity of the injury, she was referred to Tamralipta Medical College Hospital for specialized treatment.
Upon arrival at Tamralipta Medical College, a medical team was assembled to perform surgery. The team, led by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Shiv Shankar Dey and ENT specialist Dr. Titas Kar, began the procedure immediately. The operation was focused on removing the iron rod safely from the child’s throat while avoiding damage to critical structures such as the airway and blood vessels. The surgery was completed successfully without further complications.
Moumita is now stable and under observation at the hospital’s pediatric ward. Doctors have indicated that she will likely recover within three to four days, assuming there are no complications. The child’s parents, Kalpana and Dipak Das, have expressed relief following the successful surgery.
